Interstate 55 (I-55) Reconstruction Study

Welcome to the Interstate 55 (I-55) Reconstruction Study. The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) is studying ways to improve the interstate through Springfield and Sangamon County from south of the Sixth Street interchange to north of the Sherman Boulevard interchange.

The focus of this eight-year study is to relieve traffic congestion and increase public safety for residents and motorists who travel along I-55. IDOT and its study team will evaluate the capacity of the roadway and its interchanges and determine the need for additional traffic lanes, interchange improvements and other roadway enhancements.

Information you need to know about this study – its goals, timeline and ways to get involved and give your input – can be found on this website. Visit often for the latest updates, and sign up to receive email notices on study activities and progress.

Update – December 2020

After several years of studying nearly 30 alternatives for upgrading mainline I-55 and I-72 around Springfield, including studying alternatives for five interchanges, the Illinois Department of Transportation, and its consulting team, led by Hanson Professional Services Inc., have narrowed down the options and now have a recommended preferred alternative to present to the public. Each alternative was studied based on providing safer, more efficient and more reliable travel for motorists.

To help better explain the recommended alternative, the study team has created an aerial video that showcases the current study area and walks through the proposed changes and upgrades.
